MILWAUKEE (May 4, 2010) - The Milwaukee Wave will play two beach soccer exhibitions this summer, 4 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at Milwaukee's Bradford Beach, and 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at Racine's North Beach.
There is no admission charge for either contest. The Milwaukee game is a part of the Bradford Beach Jam, the beach's largest event of the year. Wave players will participate in intrasquad games along with reserve players and additional top talent from the area. The Wave played one exhibition game last summer at Bradford Beach, and a second game in Chicago against the Chicago Storm.
Beach soccer is played with four field players and a keeper, with three 12-minute periods. Goals are wide, shots are often taken right from the kickoff and scoring is high. Many of the runs and patterns are derived from futsal, which has a great influence on the indoor game.
FIFA sanctions a Beach Soccer World Cup, won in 2009 by Brazil in Dubai. Bids for the 2011 and 2013 World Cups are being considered by FIFA.
