ROCKFORD, Ill. (Feb. 28, 2010) - Dominating power play situations on both ends, the Milwaukee Wave extended their MISL lead to a full game on Sunday, defeating the Rockford Rampage 16-10 on Sunday at the MetroCentre.
The Wave (10-6) entered the game as the No. 1 penalty killing team in the league and killed four of five against the Rampage (6-10), who lost their sixth in a row. Meanwhile, the Wave scored three power play goals and added a penalty kick goal to win their fourth in a row.
Josh Rife, Marcelo Fontana and Troy Dusosky tallied four points each for the Wave, who close the season with four home games at the U.S. Cellular Arena, beginning next Sunday against these same Rampage at 2 p.m.
The game turned with just under 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter in a 6-all contest. Milwaukee was on a power play when Giuliano Oliviero was tripped from behind inside the penalty area. Awarded a penalty kick, Oliviero hammered it home to end the original penalty. That still left the Wave with a 5-on-4, and they cashed in when Fontana snuck to the back post and made it a 10-6 game on a feed from Dusosky.
The Wave had killed 20 of 27 man-down situations before the game and gave the Rampage very few opportunities when they did have the man advantage. The only goal came with 1:56 remaining and sliced the Wave advantage to 14-10.
Ian Bennett sealed it with 1:25 to go, set up by a nice run from JP Rodrigues.
Tempers got a little short in the first half, and the Rampage's Semir Mesanovic drew a red card for elbowing Joe Hammes in the second quarter. Mesanovic, who entered the game as the Rampage's second-leading scorer with 28 points, will miss next Sunday's rematch in Milwaukee
Sunday's game features the 18th annual Mascot Game, presented by the Wisconsin Chapter of the National MS Society.
